  • Hello Folks,
Here is some information from Plan, obviously the McArthur River Mine decision is a big step for our government, we need to nurture and support this decision.

There has been lots of activity on the Heritage railway and I am ashamed to say that this missive is to late for advertising the current round of challenges that face the Friends of the North Australian Railway:

One is the proposal to amalgamate the NAR corridor from Arnhem Highway to Noonamah (Section 2645 of the Hundred of Strangways) in to the Stuart Highway - Kon Vaskalis needs to urgently slow this down so the best outcome can be achieved.

Second is the cleanup of the heritage listed Stella Maris Railway House and the Narrows (just east of Bagot Road intersection).

This is the only remnant of the 1888 North Australian Railway within 100km of Darwin.

You really have to admire and support people who give their time to try and keep just some of our fabulous territory heritage.

    FOR MEDIA RELEASE

    4.3.2006

    1. PLan: the Planning Action Network congratulates Minister Scrymgour on her decision to recommend against the extensive diversion of the McArthur River for the purposes of open cut mining by Xstrata.

    2. There is no doubt that the approval of a McArthur River Mine Open Cut Project would have had a huge and lasting adverse detrimental effect on the physical, cultural and social environment of the area. The mine would not have met foursquare requirements for sustainability of the area into the future.

    3. We recommend that the NT Government follow up the proposal by the Mabunji Aboriginal Resource Association to create a Marine Protected Area, and consult seriously with it, and the local community, on long term fishing and tourism prospects for land and sea in the area.

    4. A spokesman for Plan said, 'New development proposals for the Territory should undergo detailed research and examination by the Government for their long term sustainability. Reassurances from big companies are not enough. Communities must be listened to, and their rights protected.'

    4.3.2006
    The Hon Kon Vatskalis,
    Minister for Mines and Energy,
    Parliament House,
    Darwin, NT 0801

    Dear Minister,

There is widespread admiration for the recent decision by Marion Scrymgour, as Minister for Natural Resources, Environment and Heritage not to recommend the McArthur River Mine Open Cut Project proposal. Whatever the reassurances, it is clear that the proposal would have had a huge detrimental effect on the natural environment in the area.

Tropical river catchments are very important. We have seen the havoc that has been caused in New Guinea by the impact of mining on tropical rivers, and communities.

As always, the needs and wishes of the local community must remain paramount, with genuine consultation taking place by government. We need foursquare sustainability, not just short term gain by huge corporations.

We support the decision that the proposal for the open cut mine not go ahead. It would be a disaster to reverse it now that the scientific experts have systematically assessed its environmental impact.

We would like to see the Mabunji Aboriginal Resource Association proposal for a Marine Protected area at the mouth of the river examined, and discussed with the local community. It would provide new employment for the area, whilst preserving the natural and living environment.

    Yours sincerely,

    Nick Kirlew,
